about

"In the Pines", also known as “Where did you sleep last night”, is a classic Appalachian folk tune that I first heard as a young teenager sung by Kurt Cobain. In 2009, on a west coast tour with Jeremiah’s band The Sway Machinery, I went on a life changing shopping spree at Amoeba Music in Berkeley. I picked up a stack of CD's a foot tall, one of which was a 50 song collection of Leadbelly recordings. “In the Pines” was the first of about a dozen Leadbelly songs that I’ve since learned to play with Jeremiah. We’ve never played this song the same way twice. In the studio we made three very different versions. This was the third version, which I hope evokes the feeling of a long, slow, hot night out in the Bayou or the Mississippi Delta. The only overdub on this track is of bacon crackling on a skillet in Don’s apartment.
